What xG Actually Measures
Expected Goals assigns every shot a value between 0 and 1 — the probability that a shot like that, from that spot, in that situation, results in a goal. A tap-in from two yards out might carry an xG of 0.8. A speculative strike from 30 yards might carry 0.03. Add up every shot's xG across a match and you get a team's total xG: a single number that reflects the quality of the chances they created, independent of whether the shots actually went in.
The inputs behind that probability include shot distance and angle to goal, whether the shot was a header or off the foot, how many defenders and the goalkeeper were positioned between the shooter and the goal, and the type of play that led to the shot — open play, a cross, a through ball, a set piece, or a rebound.
Why xG Beats the Scoreboard as a Signal
Goals are rare and heavily influenced by luck, a good save, or a slight deflection. xG smooths that variance out. A team that consistently outperforms its xG is either finishing exceptionally well or riding a hot streak that tends to regress. A team consistently underperforming its xG is either running into good goalkeeping or missing chances it should be taking — and that gap is often the first thing to correct in the games that follow.
During a live match, the same logic applies in real time. A team can be 1-0 down while leading 2.1 to 0.4 on xG — a strong signal that the game is more open than the scoreline suggests, and that an equalizer is a matter of when, not if.
